...on Providing technical support to clients

We also work with small clients and although we haven’t had the same problem as @nilsgeylen, it is something we’re cautious about. We’re starting to call our hosting service Managed Hosting and being upfront about the fact that we don’t host the sites ourselves, but manage everything on behalf of the client.

We’re looking at charging the actual cost of the hosting package from the hosting provider, then giving the option of 1) paying a small quarterly fee for telephone and email support plus anything which needs doing on the server, and making it clear what that is, or, 2) charging the actual cost plus a nominal amount to cover invoicing and then an hourly rate for ANY support given.

Not sure if this is the way to go, but I like the transparency. Also, as I don’t mind doing general IT support, I’m happy to do it and bill by the hour. Fair play to anyone who doesn’t fancy that, but I do think if you deal with smaller clients you should be recommending someone to them instead.

...on Critiques Open For All

Thanks Scrivs, but where are they? Or do I need to ask for an invite to get the url?

...on Critiques Open For All

Sorry, Scrivs - I’m confused!

I’m not that bothered about the critiques but do have a vague interest, which is why I’m confused when you’ve said the Critiques are open for all and now you’re saying go elsewhere! Eh? I take it they’ve gone?

And what do you mean by the new Forums? Is that the new, future ones? Or the existing one? Isn’t this post in the latter?

...on Drawar's Next Steps...Future Is Bright

Am in there with Griffiths to some extent - I never paid for anything but remember remarking to my wife (talking about Drawar) “You can’t take people’s money and not only fail to deliver, but also actually remove stuff!”

I loved the original site, but if Scrivs ain’t got the time then fair-enough. And I don’t think there’s been any dishonesty, just a lot of learning on his part which, combined with not having a plan, has meant things keep changing.

The invite-only idea might work. Why not? If others can view the site anyway and Scrivs is not too exclusive with his invites, it could be useful quality control.

...on Critiques Open For All

Good point. I’ve thought that several times since this post first began. Where are they?

...on ƒacebook changes every designer should know

Gustavoatar - I’m finding 520px is too wide.

...on Where is Drawar heading?

What made me visit the site before were Scrivs opinions. They were proper articles, worth reading every word.

Now it’s just like any other forum, really. Useful, but not what it was.

...on ƒacebook changes every designer should know

Is anyone else getting frustrated by the changes? I like the idea of them finally embracing businesses properly, but the implementation’s really inconsistent. I built two apps only four weeks ago and now both of them suddenly show horizontal and vertical scroll bars because they’ve gone and changed the dimensions of the tabs again. Grrr.

Here’s what my testing found yesterday: http://mrportman.co.uk/widths-and-heights-of-apps-for-facebook-tabs/

...on Anyone familiar with building bi-lingual sites?

Nice information richiec - appreciated.

...on Anyone familiar with building bi-lingual sites?

There’s a CSS property called Direction which is well-supported, I think, but it’s new to me, so I can’t really claim to know!

What does the HTML look like when using Chinese? Off to find out…

...on Dear website designer...

Surely a lot of this depends on the money involved?

If this potential client is trying to hammer down the deposit from 50%, and it’s a decent job, that’d be setting off some alarm bells for me.

Likewise, it might be just my personal experience, but if it’s a small job, I’d be suspicious they’re going to be wanting the world for their money.

And on the flip side, they want to meet in person! That’d suit me down to the ground, because only once I’ve met them in person will I really have an idea of whether I want to work with them or not.

Overall, I’d be happy to meet in person and take things from there. I’d also consider meeting dad…

...on EE addicts on Drawar?

Have built several client sites using EE and am liking version 2 as you’ve more control over what the client sees when they login (although the default colour is bit wuss).

That said, I’m currently having to use version 1 for my present project because the awesome Calendar module hasn’t been updated for the new version yet. And I’m still not convinced about using it for proper ecommerce stuff, either.

...on We should all use Helvetica...

Imagine a world where everything used Helvetica...

You'd soon change your mind, then, Scrivs, even if it's just to be different.

...on The Undesign

Hmm. I like the first half.

...on 2 Reasons Why Your Portfolio Site Sucks

What do potential clients want to know when they first get on your site?

That they've landed in the right place. If you look like you sell chocolate buttons, that's no good.

I'm sorry Scrivs, but I disagree with you on this one.

...on Choose One: Easier or Better? Sorry, You Already Decided

Perhaps it's a US thing? Automatic cars? We hate them in the UK!

...on The Super Freaking Amazing Future Trend of Blogs

Personally, I am thinking it is going to be impossible to create good content, present it differently each time and also do it regularly. If it's not so regular, maybe the different designs thing is fine, or perhaps you can get someone to write your content for you.

Anyway, does a blog cease to remain a blog once the frequency of articles becomes too long?

...on Artist, Designer, or Hack?

Hey, I was going to say you can't be a designer because you haven't thought about letting 'the user do what they need to do without complications.', but I can't now as it seems you've sorted out this issue with commenting through Chrome!

Have you thought abut creating some sort of app where people answer questions about themselves and are given scores like Designer (level 2) or Hack (level 99)? You'd have to come up with a more positive name than 'hack' though, or everyone would be lying their backsides off.

...on World Wide Web For Dummies, Not Us

Yay! Good read. I teach 9-11 year olds and know exactly what you're talking about - no matter how many times I tell them what the address bar is for, they still use it like a search bar.

...not that it matter much now most browsers are combining the two. I must admit that when visiting your site using Chrome, I just type 'Drawar' into the everything bar and click through from Google. Less effort.

...on Why I Hate Your Web App

Scrivs, there looks to be a lot of personal opinion in there, but I mostly agree with what you're saying.

I still can't use Opera to comment on your site, btw, and even Chrome wouldn't let me in - I'm getting fed up with Firefox, but have to use it for sites which don't work in other browsers.
