Call to Action in the Footer

While working on a personal project I started thinking about building out the footer to include more information than I usually do. Personally, I’m for clean and simple. A copyright and contact info are just fine, but now I’m starting to think the footer is a missed opportunity.

There’s plenty of posts out there describing info to think about including (newsletter signups, contact forms, search bar, etc) and a few saying it’s a waste of time, but no one seems to have any research supporting either case.

My question is do secondary calls to action in the footer actually work? Has anyone tested to see how often they are clicked compared to overall site visits and primary CtA clicks?

Unless it is a really big footer and there isnt much distraction in the body, i dont think many even make it to the footer, let alone answering a call to action.

most information sites are filled with stuff and with the facination for packing in stuff above the fold, even less need to reach the footer.

i only check footers to look at who did the design and copyright info if i want to use tha material.

If you can keep your users engaged enough to reach the footer you already did such a great job on the design that it doesn’t matter as much where you put the call to action, the user will look for it because he’ll want more.

Unfortunately, that is the exception. This is something you have to track with SEO software to understand whether or not your layout and design are being effective.
