Company Blog as a Separate Website

Do you think it’s a better idea than to have it on the company’s website?

I’m thinking this, because the article posts are not really regular and I don’t want to cripple the company website that a user sees a 2 year old article for example…

i think sometimes it’s necessary if the main website is running a specific platform for things like e-commerce and scheduling of services. it might be able to fit in a few static content pages, but wouldn’t be ideal for blogging like throwing wordpress into a separate area.

now the other question is: should you brand the company blog a little differently, and have your company as a “sponsor” of this new brand?

as for the original post, why are the posts on your company blog so sporatic? can you try to work on a weekly schedule at the very least? otherwise i don’t see the point of a blog at all.

I don’t think the ‘location’ of the blog is all that relevant. You could go for the classic blog.company.com or have company.tumblr.com for that matter: even if they don’t directly link to each other, the two are still connected by implication.

Myself, I don’t have a company blog, but I post updates on my Facebook company page. The reasons being 1) I didn’t want to install a CMS and go through all the hassle of integrating both blog and site, and 2) I didn’t want to be insulated while most of my target audience is unlikely to be surfing the blogosphere yet would have a Facebook profile instead.

That said: I agree with the comments above. Why have a place to update stuff when you don’t? Better update your static pages then so they reflect whatever changes occur to the company and the portfolio or services.

If the issue is one of wanting to be able to update your pages without having to have the web designer do it, I’d suggest creating pages within your blog’s software for content and then asking the designer to incorporate those pages into the regular website. I’ve done that effectively with both wordpress and livejournal and I think many blog software packages will work for that too.

Otherwise, I just have to echo everyone else. Maybe you should reassess why you have a blog in the first place.
