The Design Bible?

Because so many ask: what is design, or when am I a designer, perhaps we can list some of the authorities on the subject for reference?

Whether that is visual arts in general or coding in particular, there are some books, tutorials or courses even that set the standard for principles of good design.

Here are some I know, but I'm not sure it includes the standard work of reference -- if such a thing exists.

The Elements of Typographic Style, book; typography

The Elements of Typographic Style Applied to the Web, website; typography

Designing for the Web (Boulton), website, pdf; web design

Designing with Web Standards (Zeldman), book; web design

Graphic Design Referenced, book; graphic design

The Printmaking Bible, book; print design

Principles of Universal Design, book; general design

Design Studies : Theory and Research in Graphic Design, book; general design

Discussion (10)

I've got your 10 commandments right here, thanks to Dieter Rams.

Good design is innovative.
Good design makes a product useful.
Good design is aesthetic.
Good design makes a product understandable.
Good design is unobtrusive.
Good design is honest.
Good design is long lasting.
Good design is thorough, down to the last detail.
Good design is environmentally friendly.
Good design is as little as possible.

Each principle is expanded on here.

Mau's Manifesto seconded.

I just landed a job as a Designer at a studio, and to celebrate, ordered some books:

Elements of Typographic Style (as already suggested)

Making and Breaking the Grid

The biggest influence for me when entering the world of design is Adrian Shaughnessy's 'How to be a Graphic Designer Without Losing Your Soul'. It's the only 'how to' book I will have in my collection.

Johannes Itten. Design and form: the basic course at the Bauhaus

Johannes Itten was a Swiss expressionist painter, designer and theorist and was a teacher at the famous Bauhaus during the 1920 - 1950s.

When I was a little kid it was given to me as a present and encouragement to develop my creative skills. Kept it with me since.

It's a real classic but still very readable and useful. His works on color theory are also recommendable!
